Best Social Listening
Tools for Startups in 2026

In short

There is no single best social listening tool for a startup. Pick by where your buyers talk and what you will do with a mention. F5Bot is a free start for Reddit and Hacker News, Awario a cheaper broad monitor, AdAnt's Scout turns X and Reddit threads into drafted replies, and Hootsuite, Brand24, Sprout Social and Mention suit teams that need deeper analytics.

AdAnt publishes this guide, and one of the seven tools is our own Scout. We list it where it fits rather than at the top, and say plainly where larger platforms do more. Prices and plans are as listed on each vendor's site on October 23, 2026; check before you buy, because they change.

For a founder, the useful question is rarely "how many mentions can this collect?" It is "will it help me find conversations I can actually act on?"

What should a startup look for in a social listening tool?

Six things: coverage, signal over noise, speed, what happens after a mention, analytics, and cost.

  • Coverage. Where does your audience actually talk? For many software startups that is Reddit, X, Hacker News and niche communities; consumer brands may care more about TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and the wider web.
  • Signal over noise. Two thousand mentions are not useful on their own. A good tool helps you tell a generic mention from a complaint, a competitor complaint, a buying question or a thread where your product genuinely solves the problem.
  • Speed. A thread can stop mattering within a day. Frequent alerts matter when the goal is to take part, not to produce a quarterly report.
  • What happens next. Can it rank the opportunity, summarize the thread, draft a reply, assign it to someone, or feed it into content research? That is where monitoring becomes a workflow.
  • Analytics. Larger startups may need sentiment, share of voice, history, trend detection, competitor comparison and influencer discovery.
  • Cost. A full listening platform can cost hundreds of dollars a month. That fits a company with a communications team, and is usually more than a three-person startup needs.

Which tool is best for free Reddit and Hacker News alerts?

F5Bot. It monitors Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters for your keywords and emails you when they appear. The free plan has no time limit; Silver is $12.99/month for 20 keywords and advanced filtering (for individual, non-commercial use), and Gold is $49.99/month for 200 keywords, AI filtering, RSS/JSON feeds and Slack or Discord alerts (F5Bot).

  • Strengths: a free start, simple setup, posts and comments, useful for brand and competitor keywords.
  • Limits: three communities only, light analytics, and alerts rather than a workflow.
  • Best fit: technical startups whose buyers live on Reddit and Hacker News.

Which tool gives broad monitoring without enterprise pricing?

Awario. It covers X, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, YouTube, Vimeo, blogs, forums, news and the wider web, with Boolean search, sentiment, influencer discovery and a way to find people asking for a product like yours (Awario). Starter is $49/month, or $29/month billed annually (Awario pricing).

  • Strengths: a low starting price, broad sources, Boolean search, competitor monitoring.
  • Limits: built for listening, not for publishing or running a whole marketing operation.
  • Best fit: startups outgrowing free alerts but not ready for an enterprise platform.

Which tool turns X and Reddit conversations into replies?

AdAnt's Scout. It watches X and Reddit for your brand, your competitors and the questions your product answers, ranks the threads worth joining, and drafts a reply in your voice. It never posts for you: you choose the reply and post it. It can run on a schedule, such as a morning sweep, and its findings feed the rest of AdAnt's team, from content research to video. AdAnt's plans start at $15/month.

  • Strengths: focus on X and Reddit, ranking by intent, drafted replies, scheduled runs, connected to content work.
  • Limits: narrower coverage than Brand24, Hootsuite or Sprout Social, and no long history, news monitoring or demographic dashboards. If you need those, use a dedicated listening platform.
  • Best fit: founders who would rather find ten threads worth joining than read a long listening report.

Which tool combines listening with publishing?

Hootsuite. Every Hootsuite plan includes social listening across social networks, podcasts, news, newsletters, blogs and forums. Its advanced listening, Lumen, which adds more channels, longer history and AI summaries, is available only on Enterprise (Hootsuite). Paid plans start at $99 for Standard, and every plan includes its AI teammate, Wisdom (Hootsuite plans).

  • Strengths: listening, publishing, inbox and analytics in one place, scaling past a small team.
  • Limits: more than a founder doing social alone usually needs, with the deepest listening on Enterprise.
  • Best fit: a growing team that wants one system for social.

Which tool is best for deeper brand intelligence?

Brand24. It monitors social and web sources with sentiment analysis on every plan, and an AI Brand Assistant and event detection on Pro and above. An AI visibility module, which tracks how brands appear in AI assistants, is an add-on. Plans are Individual at $249/month ($199 billed annually), Team at $349 ($299) and Pro at $499 ($399) (Brand24).

  • Strengths: deep monitoring, AI-assisted insight, sentiment, spike detection.
  • Limits: expensive for an early startup that mainly wants a few conversations to join.
  • Best fit: funded startups where PR, brand and competitive intelligence have become real functions.

Which tool suits a larger startup marketing team?

Sprout Social. It is a mature social management platform with publishing, approvals, analytics and listening, and its AI agent, Trellis, is available on every plan. Core plans start at $79 per seat a month billed annually (Essentials), with Standard at $199, Professional at $299 and Advanced at $399; listening is an add-on from Standard up (Sprout Social).

  • Strengths: collaboration and approvals, reporting, Trellis.
  • Limits: per-seat pricing, with listening paid on top; more than a solo founder needs.
  • Best fit: later-stage startups with an actual social team.

Which tool is a dedicated listening specialist?

Mention. It focuses on monitoring, alerts, reporting and competitive insight across social and the web. It retired its publishing and reply features (Publish & Respond) on January 30, 2026, so it is now a listening product rather than a publishing one (Mention).

  • Strengths: a product built around listening, with alerts and reports.
  • Limits: no publishing; its plans are aimed at businesses with serious listening needs.
  • Best fit: companies that want a listening platform, not a creation or publishing tool.

Is Google Alerts enough?

It is a useful free start for web mentions, but it is not social listening. Google Alerts emails you when new Google Search results appear for a query, and lets you set how often, which source types, the language and the region (Google). Set alerts for your company, founders, products, main competitors and key industry terms. It will not replace continuous monitoring of Reddit, X, TikTok or Instagram.

How do you choose in one sentence?

By your bottleneck.

  • F5Bot if Reddit and Hacker News matter most and you want to spend nothing.
  • Awario if you need affordable broad monitoring.
  • AdAnt Scout if you want X and Reddit threads ranked and turned into replies.
  • Hootsuite if you want listening inside a wider publishing system.
  • Brand24 if you need deeper brand and competitive intelligence.
  • Sprout Social if you already have a social team that needs approvals and analytics.
  • Mention if listening itself is the job.

Frequently asked questions

What is social listening?

Monitoring conversations about your brand, competitors, customers or market, and working out what they mean and what to do next. Monitoring tells you what was said; listening decides what action it calls for.

What is the cheapest social listening tool?

Of the tools here, F5Bot has a free plan covering Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters. For broader monitoring, Awario's Starter plan is $29 a month billed annually.

Can ChatGPT do social listening?

Not on its own. A general assistant can analyze posts you give it, but continuous listening needs current social data, recurring searches and alerts. Connecting an assistant to a listening service or agent fills that gap.

Is social listening worth it for a startup?

Yes, when conversations affect your positioning, customer acquisition, support or content. A startup rarely needs the broadest platform, only enough coverage to catch the conversations that would change what it does next.
