AI Video Quality Settings: Resolution, Duration & Model Selection
Resolution, duration, and model choice each pull on quality and cost. A practical guide to dialling in AI video generation without burning credits.
Every AI video tool hands you the same three dials — resolution, duration, and model — and most people leave them on the defaults. That's fine until the credits run out or a client asks why the export looks soft. The settings aren't cosmetic. They decide how much the model has to "imagine," how much it costs you, and whether the result holds up on a phone held a foot from someone's face. ## Resolution Is About Distance, Not Pride Higher isn't automatically better. It's better *for a purpose*. - **720p** is enough for fast-moving social cuts where the viewer never pauses. Motion hides softness. - **1080p** is the safe default for talking-head and product work — sharp enough to read text, cheap enough to iterate. - **4K** earns its cost only when the footage will be cropped, zoomed, or shown on a large screen. Generating 4K to post a 9:16 clip is paying for pixels nobody sees. A useful rule: generate at the resolution you'll *edit* at, not the resolution you'll *publish* at. Editing headroom matters; publishing compression eats the rest. ## Duration Compounds Cost and Risk Long generations are not just more expensive — they are more *fragile*. The further a model has to extrapolate from your prompt, the more likely it drifts: a face changes, a logo melts, the lighting shifts halfway through. Treat clips as building blocks. Generate in 3–5 second beats and assemble them in the edit. You get tighter control, cheaper retries, and a cut that actually has rhythm instead of one long unbroken take that wanders. ## Model Selection Is the Real Lever Resolution and duration are tuning. Model choice is strategy. - **Realism-first models** win for human subjects, skin, and physical product. Use them when the uncanny valley is the risk. - **Stylized / motion-first models** win for graphic, kinetic, or surreal work where "real" was never the goal. - **Fast / draft models** are for blocking — testing an idea before you spend on the hero render. > Draft cheap, finish expensive. The fastest way to waste a budget is to render everything at maximum quality before you know the idea works. ## A Workflow That Doesn't Burn Credits 1. Block the concept on a fast model at 720p. Confirm the composition and motion read. 2. Lock the prompt. Move to your realism or style model at 1080p. 3. Generate in short beats; pick the best take of each. 4. Only upscale to 4K the shots that survive the edit. The defaults exist to get you a result. The settings exist to get you the *right* result for what it costs — and on AI video, that difference is the whole game.
